Special Education Team

Palms Elementary is a unique learning environment.  We house the premiere Resource, Special Day (SDC), and Deaf or Hard of Hearing (DHH) programs in the district.  Students travel by bus from all over Los Angeles to join our community.

Our Resource program utilizes the push-in/pull-out model.  It is our belief that students with special needs be educated along side the regular education students as much as possible.  Therefore, our Resource teacher and Special Education paraprofessional support special need students inside their general education classrooms.

Although our Special Day Program (Specific Learning Disability) consists of 2nd through 5th graders, all students receive individualized attention.  Our Special Education teacher and paraprofessionals are highly trained.  Students are mainstreamed for the majority of the school day.  It is our goal that all Special Day Students join the general education population by the time the graduate Palms Elementary.

The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program services children in preschool through fifth grade. The program emphasizes oral skill development, the use of amplification, auditory learning, audiology, language and communication skill development, and speech. Children who are academically ready are mainstreamed into general education classes.

Eighty percent of the students with special needs are placed in a general education class for 1st grade.
