Special Education

The Los Angeles Unified School District is committed to serving the educational needs of each of its students. Children learn in a variety of ways. Special education services are specially designed instruction to meet the unique educational needs of children with disabilities who meet the eligibility criteria under the law. 

Resource Specialist Program (RSP): The RSP provides instruction and services for students whose needs have been identified in an IEP and who are assigned to general education classrooms for the majority of the school day.

Low Incidence Learning Center (LILC) for students who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing: The LILC program provides instruction and services for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing and who are assigned to general education classrooms for the majority of the school day. Students may receive support from a DHH itinerant teacher and/or educational audiologist, who focus on auditory skills development, self-advocacy skills, communication skills, and/or language skills.

Specific Learning Disability Special Day Program (SLD SDP): The SLD SDP is designed for students with disabilities who are participating on the general education/core curriculum and are working toward a high school diploma. Students enrolled in the SLD SDP work with special education classroom teachers for a majority of a school day. All SDP students are mainstreamed in general education classes for some of their subjects.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing Special Day Program (DHH SDP): The DHH SDP is designed for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing who are participating on the general education/core curriculum and are working toward a high school diploma. The program provides an environment that promotes learning to listen and development of language skills. Students enrolled in the DHH SDP work with special education classroom teachers for a majority of a school day. All SDP students are mainstreamed in general education classes for some of their subjects.
